This Sunday we will continue our sermon series on the Psalms, but with a special twist. In the 10:30 worship on Sunday, as we focus on Psalms of Lament (like Psalm 13), we will also be joined in worship by the Tim Whitmer Consort. Combining together both songs and psalms we will spend some time learning how to be brutally honest with God.
Many have suggested that the Psalms, especially psalms of lament, are best understood as the blues. The psalmist sang the blues - singing of abandonment, loneliness, fear, famine, war, sickness and death. And the modern day blues are nothing if they are not brutally honest communication.

How long will you forget me, Lord? Forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long will I be left to my own wits,
agony filling my heart? Daily?
How long will my enemy keep defeating me?
Look at me!
Answer me, Lord my God!
Restore sight to my eyes!
Otherwise, I’ll sleep the sleep of death,
and my enemy will say, “I won!”
My foes will rejoice over my downfall.
But I have trusted in your faithful love.
My heart will rejoice in your salvation.

Biblical scholar Patrick Miller believes that Psalm 13 is a model for how we should be in honest relationship with God who created us. Being in relationship means being honest. It means being vulnerable. It means being willing to share the deepest yearnings of our hearts with the confidence that we will, no matter what, be accepted and love because - or in spite of - what our heart reveals.
