Worship at Overland Park Christian Church
As we continue to grow in our spiritual journeys, we recognize that each of us has a need to offer our praise and thanksgiving to God. As a community, we enjoy a richness of diversity; however, we also share the desire to worship God fully.
Our diversity is shown in the various expressions of worship that we incorporate into our worship gatherings: hymns, praise choruses, preaching, drama, dance, visual art, reader’s theater, worship musicals, special concert events, organ, praise band, brass, personal words of witness. Each of these combine to draw us into God’s holy presence and help broaden our avenues of worship. Special Services
Throughout the year we also offer special services in line with the church year and our community of faith. You can check with the church office or on our calendar for specific times and offerings.
Ash Wednesday – An evening service that begins the Lenten season and includes the imposition of ashes.
Good Friday – An evening service the Friday before Easter remembering the Lord’s Supper, the upper room and the final hours of Jesus’ life.
Pentecost – Celebrated during our Sunday services, we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church on the seventh Sunday after Easter.
All Saints Day – Celebrated the first Sunday in November during our regular Sunday services, we remember our church members who have passed away during the year and all of our loved ones who have preceded us in death.
Blessing of the Animals – Celebrated once a year in our courtyard we welcome animals of all kinds to be blessed. We also remember animals who we have loved that have passed away.
Longest Night Service – Held during an evening closest to the longest night of the year (December 21), the Longest Night worship service offers a safe and sacred space for those who are struggling to feel the joy and light of the holiday season. It is not intended to be a service of healing, for what we lose cannot always be replaced. Yet, we use this service to acknowledge the hole that grief leaves in one’s heart, while simultaneously remembering that we worship a God who is with us, even in the darkest of times.
Christmas Eve “Come & Go” Communion – This is an informal but reverent time when you are welcome to come light a candle, receive communion, and take a few moments to spend in contemplation and prayer. It is an opportunity to slow down from the busyness of the holiday season and prepare yourself, on your own schedule, for the birth of the Christ child.
Christmas Eve Service – A family friendly service with scripture, hymns and a meditation to welcome the Christ child with one another.
