Dixie Dee (Dee Dee) Dempsey Shoemaker was born Dec. 7, 1959, to Eldridge Phillip and Thelma Jean Hunter Dempsey in Kansas City, KS. She is survived by her husband, Eric; sister Jean Ann Alden; brother Michael Dempsey (Rebecca Renard); daughters Emily, Amy (Carly Rosin), and Melanie Hager (Brett); and grandson, along with nieces, nephews, and extended family.
She died peacefully on August 16, 2022 at KC Hospice House in Kansas City following a two-year journey with breast cancer. Dee Dee was a source of love, joy, and humor to all who knew her. Her work at Mission Wellness and at home as a daycare provider gave her the opportunity to do her favorite activity: helping others.
Dee Dee’s absence is heartbreaking, a loss felt throughout the communities of Broadway Church, Turner High School alums, Tomahawk Elementary parents, Beller’s Dance Studio alums, and Girl Scouts, to name a few. She will be forever in our hearts.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held August 27 at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of Overland Park Christian Church. 7600 W 75th St, Overland Park, KS 66204. A visitation will follow at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the church. MASKS ARE REQUIRED.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in Dee Dee’s honor to the Broadway Church (broadwaychurchkc.org). Please click on the Donate button in the top right of the page.
